What Happens at Comprehensive Vision Exams

First, we will ask the patient to read the Snellen chart at the other end of the room. We will do this with each eye separately, then both together. This is done to take a look at someone's acuity. After this, we will test each portion of the visual field separately. We want to make sure that there are no gaps in someone's vision.

After this, we are going to use small devices that look like pens to check the pressure behind each individual eye. We do this to make sure that there are no signs of glaucoma, which would be an optical emergency.

Finally, we are going to use drops to dilate the eyes of our patients. We want to open up the pupils so that we can see the retinas at the backs of someone's eyes. We will check the nerves and blood vessels that power the eyes.
