Computer Vision

Avoid Computer Vision

All of us spend so much time looking at screens in our daily lives that it often affects our vision. Computer vision syndrome is becoming more common in today’s society. As many as 90% of those who work with computers will develop some of the symptoms. If you think that you are developing computer vision, call our optometry office to schedule an eye exam with one of our optometrists at Chico Vision Care Optometry.

Screen Time

This eye condition is caused by excessive time spent in front of screens. It is not just doing work at a computer that can cause this condition. It can also develop because you watch a lot of TV or play video games. Many people do all three of these activities and it can cause uncomfortable eye strain. Even children can get it, and many do because of the long hours spent on screens both at home and at school.

The Symptoms of Computer Vision

If you have developed computer vision, you will have some of these symptoms:

  • red or dry eyes
  • blurry vision
  • headaches
  • double vision
  • eye irritation
  • back or neck pain

If you have several of these symptoms, you may need to make some changes in the way you spend your screen time. Getting rid of the glare from the screen can help, as well as wearing blue light filtering lenses. You can also rearrange the items on your desk and move your monitor below the level of your eyes and anywhere from 20" to 28" from your face. If you have to strain your eyes or your neck to see the computer screen better, it can affect your vision. Remember to wear your blue light lenses at night to block the blue light which can interfere with your body’s natural urge to sleep at night.
